Portraits and places on journeys through the old countries of Central Europe. On assignment for a book project we followed a group of students as they sought out the stories and scars left by the events of the second world war and the Sho’ah. It was a difficult but important. Together we found pain and suffering and yet amazing courage and the perseverance of hope.

It can be challenging to see animals in captivity and not pity them. In many cases these animals would be better off in their natural, wild habitat. But in many cases these animals would not have survived in the wild, were in danger from poachers or discarded by owners. And their beauty, though perhaps with a note of sadness, is still mesmerizing and enlightening. Here are a collection of images I’ve taken of animals in captivity.
